Several notable motorcycle accidents that resulted in a total of six (6) deaths occurred over a two day period this past week in Central Florida. Now the news and media outlets are once again focusing attention on motorcycle safety in Florida, just as the 25th annual Biketoberfest kicked off in Daytona Beach. The annual Biketoberfest motorcycle rally held each fall in Daytona Beach is also sometimes known as the “Daytona Fall Tour” or as the “little brother” of the spring Daytona Beach Bike Week event. Motorcycle enthusiasts are drawn to the event by the warm weather associated with Florida at this time of the year and the abundant introduction of new bike models by manufacturers. Many attendees prefer the event over the spring Daytona Beach Bike Week due to the streets being less crowded and the hotels being more affordable and plentiful. The yearly event still draws more than 100,000 visitors and attendees, including a higher proportion of choppers (a type of motorbike that uses radically modified steering angles and lengthened forks for a more “stretched out” look).
Recent Fatal Motorcycle Accidents in Central Florida
- In East Orlando (near Rio Pinar) last week, both a 24 year old young man and his 23 year old female passenger were killed when the bike that they were riding on was hit by a car driven by a 60 year old woman who turned onto the road they were travelling on. As reported by maintenance workers that were present at the corner of Lake Underhill Road and Pinar Drive, the woman stopped at a red light, but then proceeded to turn left directly into the path of the oncoming motorbike. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reports that an investigation is under way and that charges will likely be filed against the car’s driver.
- In Daytona Beach a 60 year old motorcyclist was killed when his bike was hit by a pickup truck last Sunday at approximately 5 PM. The pickup’s driver then fled the crash, as was reported by several witnesses present at the accident scene. Still at large, the pickup truck’s driver fled by getting into another vehicle and, according to FHP reports, the driver was not even the registered owner of the truck.
- Just a mile and a half from the Daytona International Speedway, two men died as a result of an accident that actually involved three (3) motorcycles according to FHP reports. One biker who was travelling north on US Highway 92 swerved into the southbound lane of the highway, resulting in the three cycle crash and two deaths.
- In Volusia County a motorcyclist was killed when the driver lost control of his bike. The motorbike rider was travelling on US Highway 1 and apparently flipped his motorcycle when attempting to get onto Interstate 95 at the northbound entrance ramp. Although the reasons that the driver lost control are unclear, the bike overturned and the man was thrown off and died at the scene according to the FHP state troopers who responded and were investigating the crash.
What To Do If You’re Involved In A Motorcycle Accident
When you have been in a motorcycle accident, it is important to immediately seek medical attention if you are injured. As we noted in our recent post regarding automobile accidents, documentation is critical! From obtaining a copy of a police report, to written documentation of your injuries by medical providers, to photographs and videos of your injuries (especially road rash), the scene of the accident and to the damage done to the motorcycle and other vehicle – all can be important to winning a case.
Basically, the “ground rules” of what to do if you’re involved in a motorcycle accident or crash are the same as those that we’ve listed in our recent post: Car Accident Documentation. To ensure that you are doing everything possible to protect your rights and meet all legal requirements, please take a moment to review the lists of what you should do and what you will need to give your lawyer to help assist in resolving your case (should you decide to hire an attorney). Being prepared and knowledgeable before a bike crash may make the difference between receiving the compensation and damages that you’re entitled to or not.
