Playground injuries. If those words bring up the image of an injured child in your mind, you would not be alone. According to the CDC, more than 200,000 children 14 years old and younger are treated are every year for injuries they suffer on a playground. According to the CDC between 1990 and 2000, 147 children aged 14 years old and younger died from playground related accidents. Of those, 82 died from strangulation and 31 died from falls to the playground surface.
As you can see, a place where our children are meant to have fun can be dangerous, and even deadly. Always take precautions when your children are in a playground, especially one with a concrete or blacktop surface.
After an injury occurs, there are some things you can do to help. first make sure your child is cared for. Treatment of their injuries is the most important step you can take. Take pictures, if you are able, of the scene where your child was injured. Sometimes scenes change and documenting the evidence is extremely helpful. Use the camera in your phone if you are able to do so. Finally, try to obtain the names and phone numbers of any witnesses to your child’s injury.
